Trade Winds Movie
|
Director Tay Garnett’s comic drama Trade Winds (1938) starred Joan Bennett and Fredric March. These Ned Scott photographs support the film and its plot loaded with unexpected twists and comic turns. One of the first films Ned Scott was to shoot for independent producer Walter Wanger, Trade Winds established the bona fides for Scott in the mind of Wanger and other film industry professionals. One can stop to muse over that fact that Scott shot many portraits of Joan Bennett, Walter Wanger’s wife, and that these images were well received, if not applauded. He had also done so in the 1937 film Vogues of 1938 in which Joan starred as well. But it’s what happened next which gives me the impression that a certain buzz was created around these photographs for Trade Winds. Life Magazine printed a full page image Ned Scott shot of Joan’s young daughter who was seated on the brick step outside the Wanger’s front door. It was the October issue for 1938. That kind of follow-through was purposeful and no mistake. Walter Wanger continued to show confidence in Ned Scott. Wanger selected him for the still camera role in John Ford directed films Stagecoach in 1939 and The Long Voyage Home, 1940. |
